Why I Paint Floral-Crowned Pelicans

Why I Paint Floral-Crowned Pelicans

Growing up on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, I was constantly surrounded by the salty air and changing tides, which fostered my deep love for the ocean and its wildlife. Coastal life has always shaped how I see the world, whether it’s quiet moments watching shore birds play in the waves, catching a sunset over the water, collecting colorful sea glass on the beach, or the way nature can carry both strength and calm at the same time. That love for the ocean still lives in my artwork today.

When I moved south, I was introduced to the pelican, a bird that I immediately fell in love with. Regal, steady, and unmistakably tied to Louisiana, the pelican carries a presence that
commands attention without asking for it. It’s a symbol of resilience, protection, and tradition here, and it has quickly become a subject that I can’t stop painting.

What truly transformed my pelican paintings, though, was New Orleans itself. This city
embraces creativity in its boldest form. Color isn’t just an accent here, it’s woven into every aspect of its culture. Pageantry is part of daily life. From the music to the architecture to the parades that roll through the streets, New Orleans celebrates personal expression without apology.

Being part of that celebratory culture - parading with my Mardi Gras Krewes, creating
costumes, glittering throws, and showing up as your self fully and unapologetically - has
deeply influenced my art. The vibrant colors, the florals, the joy, the drama… all of it has made its way onto my canvases. The textured floral crowns atop my pelicans are my way of honoring that spirit in my paintings. They’re a nod to the city’s love of celebration and beauty layered on top of strength.
